The Problem: Outdated Counterweights

While fully electronic dashboards are common today, in the past, analog dashboards using counterweights provided accurate information to the driver. Counterweights are used for needle indicators to provide accurate readings. A foremost analog dashboard manufacturer came to Allied Sinterings for a custom counterweight solution to replace their current counterweight. The client was using lead counterweights but wanted a replacement material with the same weight and high specific gravity as lead.

The Solution: Unique Admixed Metal Invention

Allied Sinterings utilized our engineering expertise and creativity to develop an innovative solution for the client. We invented a custom powdered metal counterweight by admixing tungsten and brass. Tungsten was used to achieve the intended weight, and brass was used to achieve the desired shape. This demonstrated our ability to develop an out-of-the-box solution tailored to the client’s exact needs. We helped them eliminate lead from their dashboards, and they were pleased that the new counterweights could be used in the same needle molds as their old counterweights.
