Powdered Metal Components for Semiconductors and Electronics

Powdered Metal Components for Semiconductors and Electronics

Semiconductors and complex electronic assemblies power equipment, products, and devices in just about every industry. To keep up with demand, manufacturers need access to large quantities of high-precision metal components for electronics applications, including heat sinks, pins, contacts, and circuit breakers. And as electronic assemblies become increasingly small, so do these parts.

Powder metallurgy is a trusted process for manufacturing these tiny yet intricate components with high precision. Allied Sintering specializes in this type of manufacturing for miniature and small parts in the electronics applications as well as in a variety of other industries. Learn why powder metallurgy is a reliable process for electronic and semiconductor applications and about our capabilities.

Why Powdered Metal for the Semiconductor and Electronics Industry?

The unique advantages of powder metallurgy (PM) manufacturing over others include:
Precision

Precision

Powder metal manufacturing is highly repeatable because each part is pressed into an identical mold. High-precision molds can produce parts within 0.001 in. tolerances, even for complex or intricate shapes.
Miniaturization

Miniaturization

PM processes are compatible with very small parts like those used in electronics applications.
Cost-Effective Manufacturing

Cost-effective production

Powder metallurgy is very cost-effective compared to machining and additive manufacturing. PM is a superior process over machining for creating complex shapes, producing next to zero waste, and reducing the need for secondary services. Compared to additive manufacturing, PM is able to repetitively produce hundreds of thousands of parts in a short amount of time.
Less Waste

Less waste

PM is a near-net manufacturing process. This means that molded parts are exceptionally close to their final shape, which reduces material waste to approximately 1%.
Material Diversity

Material diversity

This process is compatible with many types of metal including brass, stainless steel, copper-infiltrated materials, and other options. This makes the process an option for a variety of applications that require specific thermal or electrical conductivity properties.

In the powder metallurgy process, fine metal powders are blended with binders and other additives to create a raw material with specified properties. The powder is pressed into a mold and compacted so it retains the shape. Following compaction, the components are placed in a sintering furnace, which heats them to just below their melting point, causing the metal particles to bond into a permanent shape. This process combined with Allied Sinterings’ specialization in manufacturing miniature components is what makes powder metallurgy an excellent choice for semiconductor and electronic components.
